Course Overview

A Commercial pilot course offers comprehensive aviation training, covering both theoretical and practical assessments.  A person having a CPL can act as a pilot for single and multi-engine aeroplanes and can also work as a co-pilot.  This course focuses on operating the aircraft according to DGCA requirements. CPL training is essential for students who desire to fly a commercial aircraft. One can enroll in the pilot course. After completing the CPL Ground Course, the candidates have to undergo practical training to start their career as a pilot in a commercial airline. More than 26,500 pilots are operating in India right now.

Eligibility for a Commercial Pilot Course

  • For obtaining a commercial pilot License in India, the candidates should have passed class 12th in science stream from a recognized board/university.
  • One should be at least 18 and not exceed 65 years to enroll in a commercial pilot course.
  • One should have at least 200 hours of flying experience and clear 5 DGCA Exams to apply for a Commercial pilot license.
  • Students should be medically fit according to the standards of DGCA.

Commercial Pilot License Course Duration

The CPL course duration includes 80 hours of ground training along with 200 hours of flying training. There are three stages in the CPL course:

  • Ground Classes for CPL
  • Simulator Training
  • Flying Training


CPL Course Syllabus

The commercial aircraft license course provides profound knowledge of aircraft functions and the operating systems.   There are several subjects covered under the CPL syllabus to emphasize the understanding of all the concepts.  The five subjects are as follows: -

  • Air Regulations
  • Aviation Meteorology
  • Air Navigation
  • Technical General
  • Radio Telephony

  • Flying Hours Required for Commercial Flying License
    • Solo Flights: Trainees gain confidence by performing solo flights.
    • Supervised Flying: Flying experience under the supervision of an instructor.
    • Cross-Country Flying: This involves cross-country flights, teaching navigation between airports, and route planning.
    • Night Flying: Night flying hours help aspiring pilots develop proficiency in navigation in low-visibility conditions.

Commercial Pilot License Holder Salary


The salaries of a CPL holder vary from airline to airline and also depending on experience.

Entry-Level Pilots

  • Position: First Officer or Junior First Officer
  • Monthly Salary: ₹1 lakh to ₹3 lakhs
  • Annual Salary: Around ₹9 to ₹12 lakhs

Mid-Career Pilots

  • Position: Senior First Officer or Captain
  • Monthly Salary: ₹2 lakhs to ₹7 lakhs
  • Annual Salary: Around ₹20 lakhs to ₹50 lakhs

Experienced Pilots

  • Position: Senior Captain or Flight Instructor
  • Monthly Salary Range: ₹5 lakhs to ₹10 lakhs
  • Annual Salary:  Around ₹1 crore
